1ST GRADE::HM STEM
WELCOME! THIS SITE IS TO INFORM YOU ABOUT EVERYTHING FIRST GRADE AT HERBERT MILLS STEM ELEMENTARY. YOU WILL FIND A LOT OF RESOURCES AND INFORMATION TO HELP YOU HAVE AN AWESOME YEAR IN FIRST GRADE!
Thank you for your patience with dismissal this afternoon! Overall, dismissal was very successful. There are a few minor changes that we will implement tomorrow. We will have a staggered dismissal with bus riders being dismissed at 2:25, car riders being dismissed at 2:27, and walkers and daycare students being dismissed when the bell rings at 2:30. If your child is walking home by themselves they will continue to do so. These children will be dismissed from the Door 5 hallway. If you are a parent that is parking to gather your child or walking up to gather your child, then these students will no longer wait outside by Door 4, but will be moving into the hallway at Door 5. You will be able to pick your child up at Door 5 with your orange pick up card. These students will no longer walk out of Door 2 and walk to Door 4 where they were dismissed today. These children will now stay in the building and line up in the hallway at Door 5. The parent waiting area will still be located by Door 4. Please see the attached updated dismissal map. If you have not yet returned your student’s salmon-colored EMA (Emergency Medical Authorization) form and their mint green-colored Authorization for Student Pick-Up form, please turn these in as soon as possible. We need these to know who we are allowed to release your child to at dismissal and who to contact in case of emergency. Please call the office if you need extra copies of these forms sent home. Thank you for your patience with dismissal. We will continue to fine tune it throughout this week as needed so we can have a smooth dismissal experience for everyone! Sincerely, Mrs. Mary Ellen Weeks, Principal Mr. Chris Cracraft, Student Support Specialist (614) 367-2160
Mrs. Russell has asked the teachers to remind parents to "check out" with the office before leaving the building. Be sure to turn in your visitors badge to Mrs. Russell before you leave, even if you aren't staying long! THANK YOU! Dear Herbert Mills STEM Elementary Families, This year, we will be implementing a new building-wide policy regarding birthday celebrations. For the safety and well being of all students, we will no longer be allowing food treats to be brought in. We also will be holding any deliveries such as flowers, balloons, etc. in the front office until dismissal. Some of these considerations that went in to making this decision include: Safety: With 1 in 13 children having at least one food allergy, anyone serving foodto children needs to be aware of food allergies and the potential for a life-threatening allergic reaction. More than 15% of school-aged children with food allergies have had an allergic reaction at school. These reactions range from mild to severe and even fatal. The safety of all students is one of Herbet Mills STEM Elementary’s top priorities. Inclusion: Sending in a food treat to the classroom to celebrate can exclude those children who have food allergies, diabetes, or other dietary restrictions. It also can exclude children who come from families facing financial hardships who are unable to afford to send in items for a special celebration. Loss of Instructional Time: Although staff will continue to find creative ways of celebrating birthdays/special events with students, it is important to protect the instructional day so that it is not spent on cutting cake, cleaning up messes, and dealing with hurt feelings. Please know that we are not trying to take the fun out of birthdays. Classroom teachers will continue to recognize children on their special day in special ways. If you would still like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, please see the attached sheet for suggestions for non-food ways to do so. We just ask that you always check with your child’s teacher prior to sending something in. This is a learning process for all of us, but we trust that you understand how deeply important it is to respect and adhere to these guidelines. The safety of all our students is our utmost priority and we appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Thank you for your continued partnership! Sincerely, Mary Ellen Weeks Principal (614) 367-2160
